Der Ire Sean Thornton hat in den U.S.A. als Boxer Karriere gemacht. Nun kehrt er zurück in sein Heimatdorf. Mit Freuden heißen ihn die Dorfbewohner willkommen - bis auf einen: Red Wil Danaher. Sean hat ihm nämlich ein Haus vor der Nase weggeschnappt. Wie der Zufall es will, ist Red der Bruder von Seans großer Liebe Mary Kate. Gemäß der irischen Tradition hält Sean bei ihrem Bruder um ihre Hand an. Dabei wird er fortwährend von Red Will beleidigt. Aber Sean geht einem Kampf aus dem Weg. Mary Kate schämt sich deswegen. Sie fordert ihren - vermeintlich feigen - Mann auf, Red Will zur Herausgabe der Mitgift zu zwingen. Erst als Sean sich ihr und ihrem Bruder handgreiflich zeigt, wer Herr im Haus ist, gewinnt er ihren Respekt.
